The art of Blockprinting and Yoma

Updated: Mar 3

India’s rich textile heritage is woven with stories of artistry, tradition, and generations of skilled craftsmanship. One such treasured craft is hand block printing—a centuries-old technique that transforms fabric into a canvas of intricate, hand-stamped patterns. At YOMA, we are honored to collaborate with master artisans who bring these ancient techniques to life.

Block printing has been practiced in India for over a thousand years, with certain regions—such as Rajasthan and Gujarat—renowned for their distinct styles. The process is entirely manual, requiring a deep understanding of dyeing, pattern placement, and rhythm. Each design begins with a hand-carved wooden block, often sculpted from teak wood, where artisans etch delicate motifs using chisels and small hammers. These blocks are then dipped in natural or azo-free dyes and pressed onto soft, breathable fabrics, one impression at a time.

The beauty of block printing lies in its imperfections—every variation tells a story of human touch, making each fabric unique. This slow, mindful process aligns with our philosophy : to create clothing that carries the warmth of human hands, just like motherhood itself.

When we set out to bring the essence of block printing to our YOMA collections, we knew it had to be a collaborative and intentional process. We traveled to India, visiting artisan families who have dedicated their lives to this craft. Sitting with them in their workshops, we witnessed the patience and precision required to create each print. We witnessed firsthand how their art is passed down through generations, from father to son, mother to daughter.

The prints we choose for our collections are not just patterns; they are stories woven into fabric. Stories of nature that meet in the heart of YOMA - flowing vines, delicate florals and rhythmic waves - imprints that reflect the timeless nurture of a mother's embrace. From selecting plant-based dyes that are gentle on the skin to choosing breathable, organic fabrics, we ensure that every piece we create is safe, sustainable, and full of meaning.

By choosing hand block prints, we are not just embracing an age-old art form; we are also supporting the livelihoods of skilled artisans, sustaining eco-friendly production methods, and preserving cultural heritage. Each dress in our collection carries the fingerprints of its maker, a reminder that fashion can be personal, ethical, and deeply connected to tradition.

At YOMA, we believe in honoring the past while designing for the present—creating timeless dresses that mothers can wear through pregnancy, breastfeeding, and beyond. Every block-printed piece is a labor of love, made by artisans who pour their heart into their craft, just as mothers pour their love into their children.

To be a mother is to flow like the river, stroking each moment with equal presence and surrender. To be the dance of ever-changing currents, to follow the pathway right back to the source of all beginnings .
